We on the Train

We on the Train

In the movie, the girl on the train mentally created a reality about people in houses that lined the train track.  She envisioned a loving marriage–something she had lost–between a man and a woman who lived in one of those beautiful homes. …turns out she was “dead” wrong! They were far from loving towards each other. Do you ever play such a ‘train game?’ You meet someone who looks all put together – the perfect life portrait – and conclude what their life must be like… perfect? The Dose used to frequently do this activity back in...

In and out… sans the burgers!

In and out… sans the burgers!

The Dose has a friend, let’s call her Wendy. Wendy is one of those city dwellers with a two-bedroom condo. Square-foot wise, she’s considered to live in a small space. So, one of her guiding principles is that, for every item she purchases, one item needs to be removed from the homestead. The Dose has a relatively small dwelling as well, so I’ve picked up on this principle to keep my home uncluttered. Seeing its benefit, I’ve applied this principle to my ‘extra curricula’ activities as well. As my life is getting more engaged with new...

Busy as a Buzzing Bee

That word – busy – has a certain connotation for the Dose… I can only picture a busy person moving papers from one pile to another. Doesn’t seem too exciting to me. Yet, it’s frequently the chosen response to the question – “How are you?” Though I am a busy gal, the Dose sought out to find the best word to describe, well, the word busy! With my amateur market research skills, I tested out three synonyms with one very smart friend. “Active”: implication relates to a sport-minded, exercising person. This is not always the situation with some...

The Ultimate Icon

The Ultimate Icon

Icons are images known to all. Think about it… three black circles strategically placed, and you see Mickey Mouse! Icons are creative and cool. They provide a universal message in one simple symbol. The Dose loves working in an office – or should I say people-based – environment. Every environment has a culture that is groomed by leadership and fostered by the people. Never hearing the phrase – cultural icon – the Dose was surprised to be referred to as such in my work place. Apparently my “being” represents the corporate culture of the...

The Best Year of My Life…

The Best Year of My Life…

…thus far! Play the word association game with the word “resolution” and usually the following phrases are front of mind: dieting, exercising, and quit (fill-in-the-blank)-ing. Resolutions—most of us have made them along the way, and most of us have ditched them on the side of the road by springtime. This past year, the Dose made an unusual resolution. One that was sustained every single month. As 2017 marked the year of a very big birthday, the Dose just had to make this year different from the rest… one that would be memorable, be exciting,...

Lights – Color – Action

Blue and White Red and Green Silver and Gold These colors can all represent one thing – December! Yes, this is the month that is bright with color and shine from all the glitter and lights. Interesting that during this one month a metamorphosis occurs. Think about it: our hearts are open to give to those without people are intent on visiting family and friends, seemingly trying to get along better than at any other time of the year spirits tend to be lifted as we reflect on the season As a society we appear to be more generous with goods and...

On The Search

On The Search

It never failed… young Dose could never locate whatever the heck my mother had asked me to find! Doilies in the top drawer of the buffet were never in my view, neither were the guest towels in the linen closet. That’s when I’d shout to Mom, “I can’t find it.” My mother’s response to my holler? “Look with my eyes.” Today, I frequently put on my mother’s eyes, and the Dose is amazed at what I find… I find the good in all people… even those seemingly bad. I find the silver lining to the dark cloud. I find the flicker of hope whenever a trial...

As Dark is to Light

As Dark is to Light

As dark is to light, silence is to noise. Silence. Lack of noise – a form of darkness. To the Dose, it’s as close to death for me here on earth. Sure, I like quietness when falling and staying asleep, but silence when my mind is screaming? No. I don’t like the silence when I’m wrestling with my thoughts. The Dose prefers a noisy distraction! In a world of lights and sounds, silence is not always welcomed. Maybe some of us don’t like silence because then we have only our thoughts to hear… thoughts that need to be reckoned with or acted upon....

A Year Long Holiday

A Year Long Holiday

A gourmet farm shop is known for providing samplings of their fruits, vegetables, and homemade dishes. So during this season it wasn’t unusual for Wilson’s to serve their customers Thanksgiving tastings. The Dose patiently stood in line to receive a pre-holiday foretaste. I was fortunate enough to be behind a woman who decided to inform the server exactly what she wanted… white meat only, easy on the stuffing, more cranberry relish, and make certain that the gravy doesn’t “touch” the relish. Her order was placed like one ordering food in a...

The Generosity Factor

The Generosity Factor

Growing up with relatives who lived through the depression, frugality was a discipline. My uncle watched every penny, yet my aunty would slip little Dose an extra dollar in my birthday card. That extra dollar may have bought me a trinket but, more importantly, it gave me a memory and a principle that I now live by. There were days when I’d be like my uncle, carefully calculating the waiter’s tip, the bellman’s gratuity, and the shampoo girl’s thank you. Never giving much thought about generosity, I gave what was deemed appropriate…typically...
