12.31.2016

Fast forward. It’s the last day of 2016. You’re at a party and someone asks you “What were the highlights of this past year?” Start crafting your answers now. By the end of 2016 I will have… Start this new year with the end in mind. Happy 2016!

The Magic 8 Ball

The Magic 8 Ball

“He loves me, he loves me not.” Words spoken as flowers petals are slowly pulled off. Unfortunately, “He loves me not” is what 13-year-old Dose came to believe as the last petal dropped. Imagine relying on a flower for an answer. Crazy. But do we not do that now? Not with flowers, but with a flip of a coin, a visit to the local psychic, or a tally from a 100-friend poll. After making many significant decisions in my life, and watching others make their life-changing choices, the Dose has come to realize that such decisions are so...

Human Splinters

The stairway banister: designed to be helpful, not harmful. But it was. Part of that bacterium-laced banister took up residence as a splinter in the thumb of my friend… leading to hospitalization, surgery, leech therapy, and a new thumb. Yes, that is the power of an object under one’s skin! People can be like splinters. You know the type. The ones who get “under our skin.” They have a way of intentionally irritating us. Intentionally annoying us. Their words or actions are like poison – out to infect our very souls by igniting negative...

2015: The Year of Risk

Posted by on Jan 11, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

“The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot
learn, feel, change, grow or love.
Chained by his certitude, he is a slave; he has forfeited his freedom.
Only the person who risks is truly free.” ― Leo Buscaglia I choose to risk…it’s worth the risk. Care to join me?

Yes or No

Posted by on Jul 3, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

It’s a seemingly easy question as there are only two options to choose from. Yes. No. Both words that are too easily used or not used enough. Some people have difficulties refusing, rejecting, or just plain saying ‘no.’ They are the people pleasers. Never wanting to disappoint means never saying ‘no.’ For those in this camp… let’s talk. When you say ‘yes’ to all requests, you are ultimately saying ‘no’ to something else. And the Dose knows that you people pleasers really can say ‘no’ … as you would say ‘no’ to committing criminal acts or...

$ £ ₠ €

Oh the irony of money… we worry whether having too little or too much and–don’t kid yourself–when loved it is the root of all evil. I do find it interesting that money is a frequent point of conversation. The form of such conversation is more indirect–what was given to people as a gift, what they bought, or what they are about to purchase. Frequently the proverbial price tag is slipped into the discussion to ensure that their “richness” is conveyed. Money appears to be a security blanket, a right-of-brag, and a source of power. But with the...

I love you, I love you not…I love you

Posted by on Mar 1, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Did you ever have a love-hate relationship? It’s that relationship where you love someone yet can somehow hate them at the same time. I’m currently having one of these relationships and it’s with my conscience. My conscious is great as it guides the Dose to better behavior. It helps me stay on the straight and narrow, so to speak. I like that. Being a person who is risk averse, my conscience ensures a reduction in self-induced troubles. In the same vein, my conscience taps me on my shoulder at times the Dose gets a bit snarly or testy with...

Party of One

Home alone. Alone time. Being alone. What the introverts love, the extroverts dread. As a typical extrovert, the Dose gets energized in the presence of others. Just one other person is sufficient for me. So the thought of being home alone, having alone time, or staying alone for long periods can be quite distressing. I was once told that I “do” aloneness well. And this is true. The Dose has conquered the challenge of having more alone time than my heart’s desire. And now, quite frankly, the Dose sees the benefits of overcoming such a...

“They” Say

Posted by on Jan 13, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

The “theys” have much to say. They say that two wrongs don’t make a right. They also say, “Don’t get mad, get even.” Interesting how the theys are on both sides of the fence when it comes to how to behave when someone does you wrong. I grew up in the “two wrongs don’t make a right” camp. If the Dose heard it once, I heard it a million times during my formative years. And so, as an adult, I struggle when I hear of people returning the same bad behavior to the giver. Wouldn’t that make them like them? As for the “don’t get mad, get even” deal…...

31 December 2014

Posted by on Jan 1, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

As I fast forward to the end of this new year, the Dose ponders the following questions: Will I be a better person than who I was on 31 December 2013? Will I have allowed new people and relationships to come into my life this year? Will I have added value to the world throughout the year? Will I have touched someone’s life? Will I have exercised my life’s purpose and passions to the fullest? Will I have stopped bad habits and started better ones? Will I have been more spontaneous or will I have continued to come up with excuses? Will I have...
