I recently had the opportunity to experience a South African safari—complete with a jeep, a guide, and lots of animals on the loose!
No doubt, the Dose learned much from the guide, but most interesting to me were my own observations.
Did you know…
The same stayed with the same. Giraffes hung out with other giraffes. Rhinos with other rhinos… etc., etc., etc.
Survival and reproduction were their focus. Everywhere in the park, these animals were on the hunt for their next morsel of food and lick of water, even if it was off of a leaf. And mating seemed to always be on their minds!
As for the order of hierarchy… Lions rule! We in the jeep were told about this, but the other beasts know this instinctively. Lions get the first dibs at the kill. Full stop. Period.
By the end of the trip, I came to learn the reality of how these animals truly live in their habitat. The two dead giraffes on the side of the road was a result of them fighting each other to death. Finding food was a minute-by-minute activity. Fighting for a mate was common practice. And those lions did not share what other animals needed… namely giraffe meat.
Final reflection from the jeep: Animals are to be respected and appreciated… not emulated!
