Relive. Retell. Remember.

Storytellers learn to tell a story by reliving it out loud. There are speakers so effective in sharing their stories that it is relived and comes to life particularly through their emotions.

I love and appreciate those stories as they bring me into the proverbial shoes of another person.

Though, the Dose is thinking there are times better not relived – but just retold. No emotions to be expressed.

Why?

Reliving a stressful experience probably has the same visceral effects as when it was occurring in real life!

With each and every “upsetting” event in our lives that leads to anger or anxiety, unfriendly hormones and substances are released throughout our bodies… all causing us harm.

So I am of the belief that reliving those events – through thoughts and voice – leads to this same release!

Sometimes I do share      the upsetting times in my life, but I retell vs relive. Why would I want to get all riled up AGAIN over the results of being mistreated or misunderstood?

For me, what is important about these experiences is that I remember them. Remembering provides me with intel… the information I need to either course correct in how I communicate or react to situations.

Relive. Retell. And remember to remember!

  1. Dose, you’re right. Being retrospective and repeating that action over time, can provide more clarity and context so that one can apply both (clarity and context) to future events.

  2. Once again you offer sound advice. Retelling or reliving an experience is a learning tool. This experience is really necessary in order to survive in .life.
By the way. That is a terrific picture.of you!
