My mother told me that telling people what to do is tricky. Tricky because how could a person tell another person what to do if they were never in the other person’s “shoes”?
Though there are plenty of people wearing size 6.5 shoes, boots, and sneakers… what else could there be in my “footwear” that other people need to experience before giving me advice?
People walk in paths that are typically determined by their own will and ways. These are uniquely created by many things such as upbringing, social interactions, and personal experiences.
Once, the Dose had the opportunity to sit with a woman in great distress who was looking for advice… specifically asking what she should do.
After she told me her story, this woman looked at me awaiting my thoughts on her situation.
My response was for her to pretend I just told her the same story – this time it would be about me and not her. And then I asked her how she would advise me.
From that one question, this anxious-ridden woman knew exactly what to do.
Think twice about the “If I were you” directive… as you are not them and they are not you!
