Hostess with the Mostest!

This phrase percolated in the 1950’s and was stated to describe hostesses who went over and above to serve their guests.

My mother was referred to as the hostess with the mostest, and I can see why. She would clean our already clean house from top to bottom when company was invited.

She did it all right… provided delicious homemade food, a comfortable setting, and a way to engage with the guests.

Today, the Dose certainly ensures the dust bunnies are addressed, and sometimes the homemade is substituted with a store-made feast.

However, I do live by her tried and true tips for best hosting…

  1. Don’t wear a watch: looking at a watch may tip my guests to leave prematurely.
  2. Ensure to have more than enough food: serving seconds needs to be an option.
  3. Use the best dishes: displaying an honoring gesture to my guests is important.
  4. Plan as much possible in advance: preparing food while entertaining guests in my tiny kitchen is not ideal.
  5. Keep the vibe fun: fussing and worrying in front of guests will only ruin the atmosphere.

Hosting: an art, a skill, and an effort… worth it all to be considered the “Hostess with the Mostest!”
