-ish

Our everyday English language uses the suffix “-ish” to convey a “somewhat” to the associated word.

This is a simple suffix with a complex meaning… or should I say – complex translation!

Let’s test this out: “I’ll see you at 1-ish.” But what number of minutes reflect this “ish?”

Does 1-ish translate to +/- 5 minutes? Or is it a way to communicate that any time between 1:01 and 1:59 is acceptable?

The Dose appreciates this suffix, for it provides me a loosey-goosey time commitment.  You know, one that factors in dilly dallying!

For all the good “-ish” can provide to the deliverer of a message, it leaves the recipient uncertain.

Be thoughtful… use “-ish” with respect and regard for the one receiving your message!
