small package… BIG IMPACT

Words of conjunction: if, and, but. These not-so-long words have great impact.

The impact after the word “but” is: “I just gave you the good news, now here comes the bad.”

The impact after the word “if” is: “Don’t get your hopes up, there’s an excuse coming.”

As for the word “and,” there’s the implication of more.

Of these three, the Dose is partial to “and.” Switch in the word “and” in the following three sentences and decide which sounds better.

The snow is beautiful but too heavy to shovel.
The snow is beautiful and too heavy to shovel.

I love you but I need you to help me.
I love you and I need you to help me.

I would if I had more money.
I would and could with more money.

The Dose has started the habit of substituting “and” for “but” and “if.” With this subtle change in vocabulary, my messages are met with more pleasantries. Though my communication point may be negative in nature, my word tone is quite the contrary.

And, if, or but… your choice. Mine is “and.”
