What is Old?

Old is a word defined as “many years,” “relatively long period of time,” and “no longer young.” Note: no number of years provided.

I’ve heard multiple definitions of something being “old” based on the sliding scale of the assessor. Basically, this denotes a judgement call.

Every year my age increases so I do get older.

But am I old? Well, place me with a 30-year-old and, yes, I could be considered old by that person. Yet to a 90-year-old… the Dose would be seen as a spring chicken!

Regardless of this comparative assessment – what constitutes being old? Or better yet, what defines being young?

Some say it’s a mindset, it’s the ability to be physically active, and/or it’s related to the degree of engagement in life.

Older-than-me folks who have a young essence seem to have a mix of those three attributes. As the youngest in the family, my mindset has been permanently fixed on being young. Need I say I keep turning 29 every year!

As each birthday passes, regardless of your age, think of yourself as not old… just older in body and soul and hopefully wiser in mind.

This is my Happy Birthday to you!
